10 Facts About the Liposuction Procedure

Because of the popularity of cosmetic procedures, many people may consider themselves well informed about liposuction. Surprisingly, there are many facts and benefits that aren’t widely acknowledged. Take a look at 10 things you might not have known about this procedure:

1. The first lipo-like procedures were performed back in the 1920s, but the results didn’t turn out well. The procedures that are practiced today came about in 1982 by a French surgeon, Dr. Yves-Gerard Illouz. His modern techniques produced good results with less adverse effects.

2. Liposuction goes by many different names. You may read about it as liposculpture, lipectomy, lipoplasty or just lipo, but it’s all the same procedure.

3. It will remove undesirable fat, but you can’t expect it to remove all of it. This surgery is really intended for patients who are close to their ideal weight and only have a small, targeted area needing fat removal. If you suffer from obesity, you’ll likely have multiple areas needing attention;
therefore, this won’t be the ideal procedure for you.

4. Where does all the fat go? There are certain scenarios where your plastic surgeon may be able to transplant fat removed from one body area to another, maybe as a face filler or buttock enhancer.

5. People who suffer from an edema (swelling) condition throughout their body, due to certain lymph fluids collecting in the tissues of their extremities, can undergo liposuction to rid the problem.

6. Extensive surgery requires general anesthesia, which places the patient into a state of unconsciousness, but smaller procedures only require a local anesthesia, which leaves the patient awake. Patients could even be asked to stand up during the procedure.

7. Dry liposuction is not frequently used today. The more common procedures include injecting fluid into the treatment area. Your doctor will determine the amount of saline, anesthetic and adrenaline fluids to be used. Super-wet lipo is when the amount of injected liquid and fat removed is about the same. Wet lipo is when the fluid is less than the amount of fat. Tumescent lipo, which is probably the most popular choice, is when there is more liquid injected than the amount of fat being removed.
