What is Laser Hair Removal?

Are you constantly waxing, plucking, or shaving to get rid of stubborn fine or coarse hair on your face or body? At Premier Plastic Surgery, Dr. Christopher Hankins offers the latest in permanent hair removal methods and reduction with state-of-the-art laser hair removal and light-based technologies. Even if you have ingrown hair that leaves you with bumps and pain, our lasers can remove the hair with no pain or side effects.
Because we own many types of technology, we can switch your treatments to the equipment that considers your hair color, stage, and growth cycles to provide the most effective treatment for dark hair.

This technique does have a limitation in that it cannot work on white or blonde hair because of its lack of pigment. Since the pigment is the source of the heat that is used to destroy the hair and bulb, it is not likely to affect these hair colors. Other hair removal methods for these colors include waxing, plucking, or shaving. The same is true for darker skin—laser hair removal sessions work best when the contrast between hair follicles and skin tones is high.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Laser Hair Removal?

Determining if you are a candidate for laser hair removal depends on the coarseness and color of your hair follicles and skin and the technology used to address these factors.

As hair progresses from coarse to fine in certain skin types, multiple lasers or light-based systems must be available to the medical practice to best address permanent hair removal. Dr. Hankins advises his hair removal patients that the hair follicle’s growth cycle is critical to a successful hair reduction treatment. As all hair grows in three stages, it is essential to know that hair can only be destroyed in the beginning stage when the bulb is in the hair bed.

During the remaining two phases, the hair is migrating out of the body to be shed while new hair growth also occurs. A laser or light source can only remove permanent hair when the hair is targeted in the beginning phase.

Laser Hair Removal First Step

What’s the
first step?

The first step to getting laser hair removal in Pearland and the surrounding Houston area is scheduling an in-person visit with Dr. Hankins at his Premier Plastic Surgery practice in Pearland. During the consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss your medical history, aesthetic goals, concerns, and expectations for the procedure. We encourage full transparency of medical history and expectations to arrive at the best possible treatment plan and avoid unnecessary risks.

Laser hair removal is safe for all skin types but has a higher success rate where the hair and skin color contrast is high. Due to contraindications, those taking antibiotics or other photosensitizing medications should not be treated. Please disclose the medications you are taking to our skin care specialist before your treatments begin.

Dr. Hankins will evaluate your target areas of concern. The face, chest, and neck are the most popular areas for treatment, but this procedure can be used on most of the body. At the end of the consultation, we aim to arrive at a mutually agreed-upon treatment plan. Afterward, a patient coordinator can help you schedule your procedure for a convenient time.

What to Expect From a Laser Hair Removal Treatment

On the day of your laser hair removal, Dr. Hankins and his team will welcome you and make sure you are comfortable. They will review your treatment plan if you have any outlying questions or concerns. Finally, a cold gel or a cooling device may be applied to protect the skin and make you comfortable.

During the procedure, you will be given protective eyewear. Finally, Dr. Hankins will deliver pulses of light to the target area. It will feel like a rubber band snapping, so you might have slight discomfort. The first treatment tends to cause more pain than subsequent treatments.

The procedure varies in length depending on the area being treated, but it can last anywhere from a few minutes up to an hour or longer. Once it is over, you might get a cooling ointment or ice packs to ease any redness and pain.

Laser Hair Removal Recovery

After your treatment, you can go about your day, but you must do your best to protect your skin from direct sunlight. Your skin will also be reddened and slightly swollen after your treatment, and you may experience mild pain for an hour or so. You can use an ice pack to alleviate these feelings of post-treatment. Your hair grows in different phases, so you must return for more sessions to eliminate the follicles from the area. On average, it takes about eight sessions spaced apart every four to six weeks.
