What is Acne?

Acne (medically known as acne vulgaris) is a common skin condition that affects adolescents and can be a problem for adult men and women. Most teenagers experience light to mild acne outbreaks that resolve over time and do not require medical intervention.

Mild to moderate acne affects men and women alike. Genetics and hormones are the basic causes, and certain medications and cosmetics can worsen acne. Dead skin cells, excess oil, and dirt getting caught and trapped in the pores and hair follicles can also lead to acne. However, approximately 25% of individuals suffering from acne have severe acne outbreaks, resulting in some degree of scarring.

These scars can vary in appearance, from deep pits in the skin to scars similar to those of chickenpox. Some wounds are embedded deeply under the skin, and others can affect the pigmentation of your skin, leaving dark spots behind. This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Acne can result in principally four types of scars:

  • Ice-pick scars – these are deep, narrow, pitted scars.
  • Rolling scars – broad depressions with sloping edges.
  • Boxcar scars – broad depressions with sharply defined edges.
  • Atrophic scars – flat, thin scars or depressed scars (anetoderma)

Acne and acne scars can affect not only your physical appearance but also your self-esteem, making you feel self-conscious. While there are many options for treating acne, including over-the-counter treatments, there are far fewer for acne scars.

What is an Acne Scar Treatment?

Acne Scar Treatments involve light and laser therapies or injections to target the scars acne has left and help smooth over the bumpy appearance, leaving you with healthy skin. There are several options for laser and injection treatments:

  • Erbium Laser Treatment treats surface-level scars. It heals quickly, and the risk of redness, skin tenderness, and swelling is minimal.
  • Fractional Laser Treatment is an advanced laser treatment recommended for deep acne scars. The fractional laser targets deep layers of the skin. The ablative Fractionated C02 lasers are now the standard for treating acne scars, delivering energy to the deeper layers of skin and stimulating new collagen without injuring the skin’s surface.
  • Bellafill can be injected under acne scars using a subcision technique that can significantly improve the appearance of some scars.

“Dr. Hankins pays attention to the small details!”

Dr. Hankins and his staff, Jean, Cassie and Diana were beyond amazing. They were extremely nice, professional and caring. I’m very pleased with the results of the subcision procedure with stem cell therapy for the acne scars I had. Dr. Hankins bedside manners are world class which gives you a lot of confidence. During the procedure I realized how much of a perfectionist and how much Dr. Hankins pays attention to the small details. I’m very happy with everything and I will highly recommend Dr. Hankins and his team for any skin therapy or procedures.

What to Expect From an Acne Scar Treatment

A laser treatment targets the vascular supply of the scars themselves. Laser treatments are effective in treating established scars and as a preventative measure. However, they may not fully erase acne scars on their own. To achieve the desired results, a combination of subcision, fat grafting, and/or microneedling treatments will be required.

Laser treatments improve the appearance of every type of acne scar. They may also treat active acne by killing the underlying bacteria to reduce inflammation.

Fat grafting or subcision procedures work to release the scar’s adherence to the adjacent tissue and help prevent its recurrence by both presenting a physical barrier to the re-adherence of the scar tissue and importing stem cells from the fat to the area, which stimulates the remodeling of the scar.
