What is Melasma Treatment?

Often, women with hormonal changes can experience brown patches on the face and neck, simulating hyperpigmentation. It is thought that these symptoms may be caused by several factors such as genetics, sensitivity to the sun, certain birth control, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), and hormonal changes that increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun. At Premier Plastic Surgery, our staff is highly skilled and trained in the diagnosis and treatment of melasma and other skin conditions with specific laser treatments, chemical peels, and medical-grade topical skin bleaching creams.

Melasma and Mask of Pregnancy

During the later periods of pregnancy, more hormones are released in the body, making the skin much more susceptible to pigmentation from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. This in turn can produce brown to grayish patches to appear on the face and neck when exposed to the sun. When this happens during pregnancy or immediately following, it is known as Chloasma or “Mask of Pregnancy.”

Recent studies have indicated that increased levels of estrogen are not the culprit but rather, higher levels of progesterone may be the trigger in the over-stimulation of melanocytes, leading to hyperpigmentation of the skin. Sun exposure has also been found to trigger melasma and skin discoloration. Patients who do not practice regular sun protection are far more likely to develop melasma.

Melasma and Post-Menopausal Women

These studies indicate that progesterone may be the stimulating hormone most prominently seen in melasma triggers. Since hypersensitivity to the sun can worsen melasma, it is recommended that post-menopausal women discuss hormone replacement therapy, broad-spectrum sunscreen, and their risks for melasma with their treating physician.

Skin Care Recommendations

  • Wear sunblock with UVA/UVB protection
  • Avoid prolonged sunlight exposure
  • Be conscious of sensitivity to creams and drugs that can increase risks
